Sean Tran is currently an undergraduate student studying finance at William & Mary. He is a first-generation college student, and is the son of two refugees from Vietnam that immigrated to the United States after the Vietnam War. Sean was born and raised in Lorton, Virginia, just outside of Washington D.C., and is interested in exploring ideas relating to his experience as an Asian-American, with specific topics including the LGBTQ+ Asian-American experience and Vietnamese-American communities in the U.S. At William & Mary, Sean has taken coursework within the Asian & Pacific-Islander American (APIA) Studies Department. For the Summer of 2019, Sean was awarded a Freeman Intern Fellowship, a selective grant for students interested in gaining experience in locations around East and Southeast Asia. As a Freeman Fellow in Hong Kong, Sean was able to travel and live in Asia for the first time ever, working at Vectr Ventures with a focus on early-stage global fintech investments. Through this experience, Sean would like to pursue opportunities in understanding the role of Asian markets in the global economy, and would like to further explore his roots in Southeast Asia with a future trip to Vietnam and potential study abroad sessions in Singapore.
